Didn't we love le Drugstore ! Alain and I would go there when we were in Paris en route vers d'autre cieux (says Alain, who's sitting at his desk next to mine. He says it was the only place open late at night). Once we bought a little bottle of champagne there (a terribly extravagant luxury for us then!) and two little pizzas at a boulangerie, and took it all back to our hotel room (Hotel de la Faculté, unfortunately bought out and renovated by the big fancy hotel across the street a couple of years ago) to celebrate (life? youth? Paris? love? whatever...).
A few years later, Le Drugstore had lost its charm, at least for us. It wasn't the magical place it had been. Just a commercial venture. --And then, well, it simply wasn't there anymore. Evidently, here's what happened:
My husband and I had lunch there (in Paris) in December 2008. I don't recall ever going there before that. It was OK. Very sleek and modern. I lost my gloves in the ladies room upstairs and my hands nearly fell off before I could get another pair. Man, it was cold on that trip. I spent the longest two hours of my life that day on the Champs-Elysées waiting for my husband to play poker at l'Aéro Club de France.
I don't remember Le Drugstore, but I do remember a bunch of us hanging out at a cafe that I think was called le Monde, le Mondain,or le Moderne, or something like that. They had a tv and that's where we saw the footage of the first moon landing.
Where was Uncle Charlie's located? I can't remember the address. He served the best cheeseburger and fries I've ever had.

ReplyDeleteI recall going to le Drugstore in Bordeaux, too. It was on one of the main streets.
