December 2009 video of U. Bordeaux Talence
This is part of a video cam series I took December 5, 2009, at our old University haunt in Talance Pessac. I did not do these for this blog but wanted you to see what its like now. There are 7 parts to this set, some very short. The last one, #7 is of a dining-restaurant complex on campus that is supposed to look like a ship.
Go through them one at a time. This is no. 1. All shortcomings in these videos, including stupid narration comments are my fault. I ain't no Cecil B.

The campus has not improved with age, to say the least! It has really gone downhill. Forty years ago it was somewhat bleak (compared to our UC campuses), but in a typically Bordelais way... flat, pine trees, sandy soil, white stone architecture of the houses in Talence and Pessac, vast empty spaces of the new campus. Since then, they have built a hodge-podge of (ugly) new university buildings, screwed up the road system beyond repair (et à faire pleurer !) even before they threw the new tram line in, while existing buildings have continued to deteriorate. I dread going there, in spite of how fun it is, still, to drop in on the Centre Californien. Downtown Bx has also changed, but some of the changes are for the better. They have renovated the quais (creating a riverside park and promenade) and they now are, indeed, lovely. All of grand old buildings along the Garonne, including the Place de la Bourse, have been cleaned and they are truly beautiful. (You should be able to find photos on Bx's website.) The new tram is surely a good thing, but it has wreaked havoc with the traffic pattern. The line going out to Talence goes from the Place de la Victoire to the original University entrance gates (Fac des Sciences). This route, which all of us took coming and going to and from town, is now almost exclusively "tram line". You can no longer drive into town by way of the Barrière St Genès! The last time I was there, I got terribly lost, in these neighborhoods I used to know like the palm of my hand. Alain and I are going up this Friday, he to work on campus and I to visit our daughter in town. I'll take a camera along and try to take some pictures. --Luckily, the vineyards never change.
ReplyDeleteHi, Skip. These little segments are great. Boy, what a disappointment to see that place now. I have absolutely NO recollection whatsoever of these buildings. Did you speak to any of the students milling around while you were filming?
