Help! I Can't Remember....
Who can tell me what BEC stands for? I'm pretty sure it's an acronym having to do with the student restaurant en ville, but for the life of me, I can't remember what it stands for.

St Jacques de Compostella
Anybody want to walk to St Jacques de Compostella en partant de Pau (ou de Bordeaux, ou de plus loin...) ?

The Debayle Family

According to my memory, journal entries, and letters home, I spent nearly all my free time with them and their friends beginning in January, after the winter break.
This photo was taken during the Easter break near Biarritz, where the family had a villa. Gérard loved to hike and, in subsequent years, would organize trekking expeditions to China, Afghanistan, and Tibet. Alas, I have lost touch with them, much to my regret.

Europe on $5 a day!
In 1968
Our "meal allowance" in Paris was 10 F.
Gasoline: 1 F/litre (now it's 1,10 €)
Un pain: 1 F (now it's what? 1,20 € ?)
Un litre de vin ordinaire: 1 F (le "vin ordinaire" (remember the bottles with stars around the top?) doesn't exist any more)
Ticket de restau U: 1,50 F?
N.B. 1 € = 6,55957 F
In 1968, $1 = 5 FF = 0,76 €
Today, $1 = 4.8 FF = 0,73 €
Things haven't changed much after all, except that the cost of living in France caught up with the cost of living in the US.
Do you remember any other prices?
I remember that I bought alot of stamps (but never called home all year, and don't remember feeling homesick).

California 1968 FINAL ITINERARY
The Hotel Dagmar is long gone, as is "La Capoulade".
However, "Les Noces de Jeannette" is still there. Maybe that's where we should hold our reunion!

What should our privacy settings be?
I continue to think about the privacy settings on this blog. Are all of you comfortable with the blog's public nature? I hesitate to make it "private" unless you are all ready, willing and able to "join" or be added as "readers". If we decide that is what we want, we'll all have to start over requesting, inviting, granting, etc. (I'm not exactly sure what this entails at your end). I don't mind doing it, but don't want to impose it on everyone if no one cares one way or the other.
If the blog is private, will we be visible to the EAPers we haven't "found" yet --those who are simply doing a web search for one of us or with the key words UC EAP, Bordeaux, 1968-69, etc.? There are still about 40 people we haven't been able to locate and hopefully the blog will provide a way for them to find us.
Another possibility would be to create a second "private" blog--or rather, make this blog private and create a second, public, blog with nothing on it except the group photo, our names, key words and contact information, to lead new EAPers to this blog with all the good stuff on it.
I've done a bit of searching on the Blogger site and forums to see what might be done. If anyone else has any ideas--or wants to create a "real" website, please share/do!
Updated search list coming out soon.

Ethel's nickname was ?
What was Ethel's nickname? Does she still have this nickname? Who was she dating after Bordeaux? We can't quite remember....
Searching for Julie Dunn
Oops, I may have sent this blog before finishing it, so here we go again.
The link below led me to Julie Dunn's name through that of her (ex?) husband, Stonewall Jackson Bird. Clicking on her name, however, led nowhere. I'll try to email the web creator to see if he knows anything.

Maryse
I talked to Maryse (Mr. Garcia's secretary and later his replacement, now retired) on the phone today. I've got her email and invited her to join our blog. I sent her our search list today. It's amazing how well she remembers us all--really! She typed up our original list. Thank you, Maryse! Even 40 years later, where would we be without you!!! She said Michael Halpern had an old photo of her. (She's lost track of him, but only recently. She too remembers that he lived in Hawaii and on the Côte d'Azur.) Does anyone else?
